N90 vs SB30 is not simply a comparison between two machine sizes.
The more important difference is the milling process.
N90 is associated with a single-stage Engelberg-type system, while SB-series compact mills use separate husking and whitening functions.
That difference can affect rice quality, breakage and processing flexibility.
Milling principle
N90
The Engelberg approach removes husk and bran using a relatively aggressive friction process.
Advantages:
- simple
- familiar
- fewer processing stages
Limitations:
- greater mechanical stress on grain
- less process control
- higher breakage risk
SB30-type compact system
The SB approach generally uses:
- rubber-roll husking
- separate whitening/polishing
IRRI describes two-stage compact rice mills as generally achieving better milling performance than traditional single-pass Engelberg hullers.
Capacity: brochure figures can mislead
Earlier capacity ranges cited in Ethiopian research included:
- N90: 800–1,300 kg/h
- SB30: 1,000–1,500 kg/h
Yet the 2024 Fogera field survey reported means of approximately:
- N90: 601.5 kg/h
- SB30: 638.1 kg/h
This illustrates why machine selection cannot be made from rated capacity alone.
Where N90 may still win
Choose N90 when:
- simplicity matters more than premium recovery
- existing mechanics know the system
- you already stock N90 parts
- capital and operational complexity need to remain low
Where SB30 may win
Consider an SB-type system when:
- reducing grain breakage matters
- you want separate husking and whitening
- finished rice quality has more value
- buyers pay more for whole grain
The real question
Do not ask:
Is SB30 better than N90?
Ask:
Does the additional rice value created by better processing justify the machine, maintenance and operating cost?
That is the business calculation that matters.
